For as long as we were able to know, either from what the elderly narrated, their stories distorted by the repetitive interpretations which, as always, included deliberate embellishments while eliminating pointless and edgy events and enriching the plot with fictional foresight and stratagems, or from the scanty primary hints that the most thoughtful of us had secured in the shelters, information was entirely under complete control, not in the sense of instant reaction but rather as the ability of direct and meticulous review.

Character and social (or antisocial) presence were instantly recreated resulting in the Operational Profile per each unit currently processed. You see, appearances deceive only to the extent that contradiction is articulated, and this has as a prerequisite either the re-examination of circumstances, or the complete and thorough critical investigation of the actions’ framework.

Instant justice-doing, with the final and irrevocable condemnation of a particular typology of deviations, was established in the name of ideals that had suffered provocative counterfeiting, in such a methodical, systematic and profound manner that was beyond belief. Even now, our moral codes seem like a product of self-evident evolution and gradual adaptation. Modern Puritanism draws its power from slippage under the tactics of chronic selective flow of information and the almost theatrical dismissal of potential doubt. And their leverage, a sine qua non condition for effectively fragmenting and humiliating every society, Fear. No objective reason is necessary, of course. Functionally, just a sense thereof will suffice.

The correlation between word, meaning and action and the implied consistency resulting from it has fallen. It was not difficult, as the catalytic factor of Memory was defenseless. The contamination was practically impossible to trace with absolute certainty. As always, some talked of a leak from unidentifiable sources of military experiments, others of routine strain mutations, then again of some contamination from novel organisms that emerged from the inhospitable darkness of the deep seeking for new habitat, with which of course we had never before interacted. The apparent diminution of the planet, as observed in terms of time-distance, up until then an achievement and a prerequisite for the orderly network operation and flow of goods, proved to be a fatal characteristic of the current civilization. The prolonged incubation kept the danger unrecognizable, until it was already far too late.

Society, with its virtually marginal inner resilience, yielded instantly, breaking with unexpected violence. The actual absence of ethical and value cohesion forcefully set free the lowest manias. You see, no one had ever thought of a potential objective deficiency in the system.

Following the initial rattling under the escalating pressure, the various states were instantly separated, making the islets of remaining prosperity more provocative than ever. No manipulation or propaganda could manage that wave. Pages from the World Charting Reference System vanished whole. Human anguish exceeded any record.
